Description:
Ankole-Watusi cattle are a breed of cow native to Africa. They have very large, distinctive horns. They are sometimes known as Ankole or Watusi, after the African tribes who raise them. Because of their striking appearance, and the resulting ability to attract onlookers, Ankole-Watusi cattle were imported from Africa by European zoos during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Zoos and game parks in Germany, Sweden, and England were among the breeders of these cattle outside Africa. Eventually the cattle made their way to the United states and are found today in many private herds.
Cattle may be solid or spotted in color. Horns are long and symmetrical, with a base large and proportional to horn length. The horns of the adults serve as formidable weapons against any intruders.
Because they were developed in a climate where daily temperatures may range from 20 to 120 degrees F, Ankole-Watusi tolerate temperature and weather extremes well. The large horns act as radiators; blood circulating through the horn area is cooled and then returned to the main body. This allows excess body heat to be dispersed.

The breed has been referred to as the 'Cattle of Kings'. Originally owned by the King of Rwanda, Watusi cattle are considered sacred
Ankole-Watusi meat has been demonstrated to be very low fat and to have lower cholesterol than other commercial beef.
