Eland
Habitat:   Plains
Size:   70 inches
Weight:   1300 to 1500 Pounds
Food:   Herbivorous/browser/grazer

Description:
Elands are the largest antelopes of Africa, standing nearly 6 feet high at the shoulder, and a fully grown male may weigh over 1500 lbs. Both sexes have heavy, spirally twisted horns of up to 25 inches long in females and 50 inches in males. Elands form large herds, often in association with zebras or giraffes, possibly in the hope of warding off lions. Elands belong to the same group as kudus, nyalas, bongos and bushbucks. Most of these antelopes have stripes and spots on the body, a white chevron on the forehead and a short mane on the neck and shoulder that continues along the spine.
Hunted extensively for their hide and flesh, and at times trained to work in harness, eland populations have greatly diminished. The cowlike eland is the world's largest antelope and is the animal most often depicted in the early rock art of East Africa. Even today, it still holds an important place in the mythology of some southern African tribes.
Elands are found in grassland, mountain, subdesert, acacia savanna and miombo woodland areas. They distance themselves from deserts, forests and swamps.
