African and Asian Leopard
Habitat:   Savanahs and grasslands, Arabian Pennensula, through Asia and Korea
Weight:   60-198 lbs
Food:   Carnivorous

Description:
The leopard is the smallest member of the four "big cats" which includes lions, tigers, and jaguars. Leopards are typically rust to yellow in color with spots. In Eastern Africa the spots are round and in South Africa the spots are more square in pattern. There is very little to distinguish African Leopards from Asian Leopards. Black leopards are heritable and have only one recessive gene and still have spots if you look closely. Black leopards rarely live in the grasslands because their camouflage pattern makes them stand out so they tend to stay in the Highlands and rain forests. The leopard is usually nocturnal and an opportunistic feeder, consuming nearly any animal it can catch from dung beetles to Eland. The leopard, like the tiger is a solitary animal though occasionally they may be seen in groups of 2-4. Like most of the other "Big cats", the leopard is endangered because of habitat destruction and poaching. Leopards are graceful and stealth with extremely good climbing skills but have difficulty going down a tree headfirst (they often take a step or two then jump) because they lack flexibility in the ankles - the only two cats who have the fleibility in the ankles for this task are the Margay and Clouded Leopard. In some regions, the leopard can mate year round having liters of 1-2 cubs. The cubs are able to survive on their own at 12 months but usually remain with their mother for two years.
