Kookaburra
Habitat:   Australia, New Guinea, and the Aru Islands.
Size:   18-22"
Weight:   1-1.5 lbs
Food:   Mice, lizards, snakes and small birds

Description:
There are 4 species of Kookaburra, all members of the Kingfisher family. The "Laughing Kookaburra" is known by its name for its human-like laugh which it uses to greet its mate after periods of absences. They can be heard at any time of day but most frequently shortly after dawn and especially after sunset. During mating season, the Kookaburra female adopts a begging posture and vocalizes like a young bird. The male then offers her his current meal accompanied with an "oo oo oo" sound. They start breeding around October/November around 3 years of age. Laughing Kookaburra are a common sight in suburban gardens and urban settings, even in quite built up areas, and are so accustomed to humans that they will quite often eat out of their hands. People often feed them but it is not recommended to feed them because it interferes with their dietary requirements and can lead to disease.
