African Grivet
Habitat:   African Savanna woodlands, mountain forests
Size:   20 inches
Weight:   15-22 lbs
Food:   fruits, roots, leaves, grass, insects, and lizards

Description:
The Grivet (Chlorocebus aethiops) is an Old World monkey with long white tufts of hair along the sides of the face.
Grivet monkeys associate in troops of up to 30 individuals. Contrary to Baboons, who spend the greater part of the day on the ground, Vervet monkeys are mainly arboreal, coming occasionally to the ground on their search for food. Their predators include Leopard, large eagles and pythons. They are very good swimmers and, if necessary they can even dive.
Grivets make noises that a variety of other primates and forest animals recognize indicating that perhaps there is a common language among some primates. Grivets make certain chatters and screeches to indicate there is a predator on the ground such as a leopard, other noises to indicate a predetor in the trees such as a snake, and yet other distinctive noises to indicate a predator in the air such as a hawk. Not only other grivets respond to this warning, but other animals within earshot as well.
