The African Spurred Tortoise also called the Sulcata Tortoise, is a species of tortoise, which inhabits the southern edge of the Sahara desert, in northern Africa. It is the third-largest species of tortoise in the world and the largest species of mainland tortoise. They can dig dens up to 30’deep and can run for short distances.

The Sulcata Tortoise is a vegetarian. It relies on succulent plants for food and much of its water. In captivity, it will eat a variety of grasses, lettuce, berseem and morning-glory leaves. The Sulcata Tortoise can grow to be 24-36 inches in length and weigh between 100-200lbs. In captivity the average lifespan is 55 years. They have a current status of vulnerable
